Ich bekam mein erstes Schlagzeug zu meinem 15. Geburtstag und spielte ab Tag eins in einer Band. Unser Proberaum lag im Keller unserer Schule, und in den Ferien nahm ich das Set mit nach Hause – einerseits um zu üben, andererseits, um die Nachbarn ein wenig zu terrorisieren.

In den ersten beiden Jahren veränderte sich mein Musikgeschmack stark: Von einfachem Rock wie Bryan Adams ging es zu Helloween, Metallica, Manowar und Iron Maiden. Ich bestellte mir damals eine zweite Bassdrum für mein Tama Rockstar Pro, weil ich unbedingt Metal-Drummer werden wollte.

Später öffnete sich meine musikalische Welt noch weiter: Dream Theater, Queensrÿche und Black Sabbath aus der Tony-Martin-Ära wurden zu meinen prägenden Wurzeln. Wenn man das in Schlagzeugern ausdrückt, sind es Mike Portnoy, Ingo Schwichtenberg, Scott Rockenfield, Rhino Edwards, Lars Ulrich – und vor allem: Simon Phillips.

Was mich heute als Drummer ausmacht, ist nicht nur, was ich höre, sondern worauf ich beim Spielen achte: Ich spiele intuitiv, nicht mathematisch. Ich denke in Atmosphäre, Spannung und Dramaturgie. Meine Toms sind für mich Melodieinstrumente, und Übergänge gehören zur Erzählung eines Songs. Ich plane selten jeden Schlag – ich plane den Weg, den ein Stück nehmen soll.

Im Laufe der Jahre habe ich mit verschiedenen Bands gespielt und aufgenommen:

• Preincarnation – Progressive Metal
• Electrified – Rock
• Aragon – Power Metal
• Anatexis – Thrash Metal

Mein Hauptprojekt ist heute Preincarnation , wo ich alles kombinieren kann, was ich an Musik liebe: große Arrangements, melodisches Drumming und emotionale Dynamik.

Außerdem habe ich ein Buch über meine ersten zehn Jahre als Musiker geschrieben – wahrscheinlich die lustigsten und chaotischsten Jahre meines Lebens.

Heute spiele ich ein weißes Tama Artstar II mit sechs Toms, inspiriert von Scott Rockenfield und Simon Phillips. Es gibt mir den Sound und den Raum für das, was ich am meisten mag: Geschichten mit dem Schlagzeug zu erzählen.

Mehr als nur Drums

Neben der Musik gibt es ein paar Dinge, ohne die ich mir mein Leben kaum vorstellen kann: an erster Stelle meine Frau, aber auch Bücher, Filme und Serien. Ich lese gern, tauche in andere Welten ab und lasse mich von Geschichten inspirieren – auf dem Papier und auf dem Bildschirm (ja, Skyrim gehört auch dazu).

Wenn ich gerade nicht am Schlagzeug sitze, schieße ich mit meinem Langbogen oder plane die nächste Reise. Ich liebe die Weite der USA und Kanadas – vor allem die Landschaften des „alten Westens“: Prärien, Berge, Geisterstädte und Orte, an denen man noch spürt, wie viel Geschichte unter der Oberfläche liegt.

I got my first drum kit on my 15th birthday and joined a band on day one. Our rehearsal room was in the basement of our school, and during the holidays I took the kit home – partly to practise while the school was closed, partly to terrorize the neighbours.

In the first two years my taste in music changed dramatically: from straight rock like Bryan Adams to Helloween, Metallica, Manowar and Iron Maiden. I ordered a second bass drum for my Tama Rockstar Pro because I was determined to become a metal drummer.

A little later my musical world expanded: Dream Theater, Queensrÿche and Black Sabbath’s Tony Martin era became the foundation of my style. Translating that into drummers: Mike Portnoy, Ingo Schwichtenberg, Scott Rockenfield, Rhino Edwards, Lars Ulrich – and above all: Simon Phillips.

What defines me today is not just what I listen to, but how I approach music: I play intuitively rather than mathematically. I think in atmosphere and storytelling. My toms are melody instruments, and transitions are part of the narrative. I rarely plan every hit – I plan the journey a song should take.

Over the years I have played and recorded with several bands:

My main work today is with Preincarnation – the perfect place to combine everything I love: big arrangements, melodic drumming and emotional dynamics.

I also wrote a book about my first ten years in music – probably the funniest and most chaotic years of my life.

Today I play a white Tama Artstar II with six toms, inspired by Scott Rockenfield and Simon Phillips. It gives me the sound and the space to do what I enjoy most: telling stories through drums.

More than just drums

Besides music there are a few things I can’t really imagine my life without: first and foremost my wife, but also books, films and TV series. I love diving into other worlds and being inspired by stories – on the page and on the screen (and yes, Skyrim is part of that).

When I’m not sitting behind the kit, I like to shoot my longbow or plan the next trip. I love the vastness of the USA and Canada – especially the landscapes of the old West: prairies, mountains, ghost towns and places where you can still feel how much history lies just under the surface.
